O'Neil auditioned for Canada Idol's season 3 in early 2005, while she was still a high-school student. Her performance on the show impressed judges, and so she was promoted to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil received praise of high quality from the judges. However, she suffered significant losses during the Top 10 as well as the Top 9 weeks of the finals when she was voted to the bottom three or second-bottom two places and bottom two, respectively. Judges were horrified by this and informed the crowd the fact that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after a series of consistently outstanding performances. She was the judge. Werner predicted, after another two incredible performances, that O'Neil was going to be the winner in the Canadian Idol competition, as being the first female and the youngest contestant in history in the wake of the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil immediately received a call from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
